Well, I have to admit, I love this time of year! The harsh winter weather has given way to welcomed warmth. The trees and flowers are finally blooming. Baseball season is in full swing. It’s just a great time of year! And, it’s a great time to be here in Irvington with many fun events going on.
Five Card Crawl
This weekend was the first Irvington 5 Card Crawl to support the fundraising efforts of the F.A.C.E. in support of the Village’s Recreation program. Teams of hungry supporters spent Saturday afternoon visiting different participating restaurants in town, purchasing food and drink at each one. Each restaurant gave visiting teams an envelope with a playing card inside. After collecting envelopes from each restaurant, all participants gathered to reveal which team had the best “Poker” hand to qualify for great prizes. The event was a great success with 15 teams participating. Special thanks to event Chairs, Janet Kovacs, Allyson Felix and Meredith Keltz for an amazing day! Also thanks to the sponsoring or participating restaurants which included the River City Grille, Broadway Grill, Il Sorriso Ristorante, MP Taverna, Chutney Masala, Irvington Bistro & Pizza, and Wolfert’s Roost.
Penguin Plunge
This Sunday, April 26th, is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s time for me, and many other people, to put on a bathing suit or costume (or both) and jump into the 40 degree waters of the Hudson River. Again, the money raised by this Hudson River Shiver will be used to support great Recreation programs and special events like the 4th of July fireworks. The Plunge starts at 1 p.m. To sponsor a plunger, please visit www.irvingtonplunge.com
Welcome Spring at the O’Hara Nature Center
We’re so happy that the weather is warmer, that we created a great event to celebrate! We’re welcoming spring this Saturday, April 25th, at the O’Hara Nature Center (170 Mountain Rd.). The fun begins at 11:00 a.m. with a scavenger hunt for younger children; geocaching for older children at 11:30 a.m.; a variety of activities from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. including learning about stormwater, meeting animals, plus a yoga demonstration from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Arbor Day Ceremony
In keeping with the outdoor theme, tomorrow (April 24th) is Arbor Day. The Village will be marking the occasion by planting a pine tree at the “Fieldpoint” Parking lot located at the corner of Main Street and Broadway. The short ceremony is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. Thank you to The Care of Trees for donating the tree.
Fire Department Open House
Topping off our list of activities this weekend is an open house at the Irvington Fire House. Our dedicated firefighters are participating in “RecuitNY” this weekend, which is a statewide effort to attract new volunteers. Stop by the Fire House on Main Street from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. this Saturday (4/25) to learn how you can get involved.
Lots of reasons to get out of the house and start enjoying this great weather. I hope to see you around the Village. Please never hesitate to contact me with thoughts and concerns.
