Historic District Committee

Introduction

In 2011, the Board of Trustees created the Historic District Committee to recommend to the Board of Trustees specific legislation and historic preservation guidelines for a Historic District, educate the general public about general concepts of an historic district and the Committee’s detailed recommendations and research sources of grant funding to partially offset the cost of implementing an Historic District.

Historic District Design Guide and Recommendations

The Board of Trustees adopted the Historic District Design Guide and Recommendations (PDF) ("Design Guide") on June 19, 2017.

The following resources are available for review:

The Design Guide is intended as a resource for property owners, design professionals, builders, realtors, the Board of Architectural Review, and anyone planning exterior alterations, renovations or new construction in the Irvington Historic District. It is a starting point in identifying the design, style, materials and historic features of the various structures in the Historic District. It should be used so that any exterior repairs, alterations or additions can be designed, built and maintained in a manner that is harmonious and compatible with the historical character of the neighborhood. In reviewing any application in the Historic District, the Board of Architectural Review shall take into consideration the costs associated with implementing recommendations of the Design Guide.

The way in which the Historic District differs from the rest of the Village is that the ARB shall be guided by the Design Guide to inform its decision as to maintaining the historic character of the building, structure and/or property that is the subject of an application for a building permit. In reviewing any application in the Historic District, the Board of Architectural Review shall take into consideration the costs associated with implementing recommendations of the Design Guide.
