Program Description:
Have you ever wondered how farmers can take one variety of an apple tree and graft it on to another to get a better fruit or to preserve the genetics of an heirloom variety? Or how the process of grafting is being applied by scientists to make certain varieties of trees more adaptive to climate change? Through this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about various techniques and concepts centered around apple grafting.
Participants will be using scionwood from antique heirloom apple varieties like Washington Irvington’s favorite apple, “Winter Banana” (Malus domestica), Henry David Thoreau’s favorite apple “Blue Pearmain” and many others to preserve the footprint of these unique varieties into participants’ yards and gardens. Through this process, participants will learn about the core principles behind the techniques of grafting and feel confident that they can successfully graft their very own apple tree!
*Each participant will get a minimum of 2-3 grafted apple trees to take home and keep!
