Bug Walk with Entomologist, Lawrence Forcella

September is still a good time for a bug walk! Explore the insect world beneath our feet, in the air, and in all manner of sylvan crevices with entomologist Lawrence Forcella. Everywhere you look in the woods you encounter insects; we usually don’t give them a second thought. Learn about these creatures, their unique and varied adaptations, and how they form one of the backbones of our forest ecology.

Outdoor Education
Day: Saturdays
Sessions: 10 weeks beginning 9/23
Time: 9:00a.m.-10:30a.m.
Ages: 4-6 Grades

Pre-registration at the Rec. Dept. required. This class is designed to develop an appreciation for earth as a whole as well as specific skills required to enjoy and benefit from the outdoors required to enjoy and benefit from the outdoors.
• Camping and Cooking
• Survival skills
• Tree identification
• Wildlife tracking
• Knife safety and use
• Outdoor crafts such as primitive tool making (axe, spear, fishing pole)
• Tree and plant identification and observation
• Shelter construction
• How to detect natural signs for time, direction and weather
The majority of this class will be spent outdoors. Some class time may be indoors for discussion, films, etc. and during inclement weather. Please prepare to be outdoors for each class.

Edible Plant Foraging

Enjoy the tastes of the wild in this stroll through Irvington Woods while we sample some wild plants. Learn to identify some common edible and medicinal plants and learn how to sustainably harvest what you find. While we have special permission to forage here during the program, the general public does not. This might be your only chance to forage this beautiful bit of land!

Open up your coyote ears and widen your owl eyes, it’s time for an adventure in the dark! Explore animal adaptations to the night and discover the parts of the woods we miss if we only explore during the day in this two hour flashlight-free program.

Animals are all over the woods, we just don’t ever seem to see them. Learn to read the tracks wildlife leave behind and study the hidden stories of the forest in this two hour workshop.
